\n<\/i>This is your invitation to visit Legion Magazine\u2019s new bilingual web experience <\/i>Blood in the Mud<\/i><\/span><\/a><\/span>.<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0Our\u00a0new interactive site examines the role of the Newfoundland Regiment\u00a0and\u00a0the Canadian Expeditionary Force in the monumental battle that took place on both sides of the Somme River in France, from July 1 to Nov. 18, 1916. The assault at Beaumont-Hamel on July 1 saw\u00a0the Newfoundlanders all but wiped out in only 30 minutes. The Battle of the Somme continued for more than four months\u00a0and more than 1.3 million soldiers on both sides were killed or wounded.
